Your next intern could be AI. Generative AI platforms like ChatGPT or Gemini offer a seismic shift for business, and it’s high time to give the sister of Cortana and Siri a chance in the office. As with any intern, supervision and rules are required.
Phi Beta Kappa Newbie: Think of Generative AI as an intern fresh out of college. It knows the answers but not the questions. It’s smarter than we are but dumb as a post without us. AI isn’t a leader but a follower, adeptly guided by its user’s prompts.
Prompting, the New Skill: Efficiently guiding AI through prompts can swiftly handle mundane tasks, test ideas and broaden creativity. AI prompts range from editing requests (“Please make this shorter” – be polite to ChatGPT) to initiating inquiries (“What are the challenges in rural healthcare?”) or exploring complex business scenarios (“Outline the strategy for launching a new tech product line”). In 2024, mastering prompt creation is a sought-after skill. Check out these prompting tips from WIRED.
AI is a Helping Hand, not a Crutch: AI is ideal for content creation, strategy and planning, but not fully dependable for research and statistics. This is partly due to ‘hallucinations,’ the term used when AI attempts to mimic patterns from extensive data, generating inaccurate information. It excels in pattern recognition, drawing from a pool of widespread usage rather than individual queries alone. When instructed with negative commands like ‘don’t’ or ‘no,’ AI can misinterpret and do the opposite, highlighting its reliance on educated prompts.
Can it Save Time and Improve Quality?: Yes, almost 70% of managers agree that AI’s role in generating initial drafts gives their human writers more time to produce better work. It kick-starts the creative process, breaks writer’s block and generates instant progress.
Say No to ‘AI-Anxiety’: Generative AI is in its infancy but has already become a valuable tool in any workspace. As professionals and humans, our job now is to learn to collaborate and foster a partnership for success.
As for the bottom line, ChatGPT as a new intern is about $20 a month. We think every human employee should have one and begin a personal partnership. How? To quote Fred Cook, director of USC Annenberg Center for Public Relations, in his recent Talk PR interview – “just play with it.”
