OC teen graduates high school thanks to Impella

On Nov. 11, 2016, his life took a startling turn by almost coming to an abrupt end. While lifting weights in the garage of his Huntington Beach home, Deits collapsed on the floor.

His “arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy,” in which fat and fibrous tissue replace muscle, caught all concerned unawares. “Usually, the first symptom of ARVC is cardiac arrest,” Deits noted.

Fortunately, his parents discovered him within minutes. Ted Deits preformed CPR on his son until the Huntington Beach Fire Department arrived. Paramedics defibrillated Deits’ heart twice without success. “I vividly remember thinking, ‘A family just lost a son today,’” recalled Capt. Travis Ponder. But after trying again in the ambulance, they detected a faint heartbeat.

Then came the real lifesaver: a newly approved heart pump for right-sided arrhythmia, which is relatively rare. More patients experience trouble with the heart’s left side. Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach had acquired the device, called an Impella, just one month before. Deits became the first child in the United States to undergo the procedure.

A few days later, the teen awoke from an induced coma with his sense of humor fully intact – alleviating concerns of brain damage due to loss of oxygen during the episode. Doctors implanted a pacemaker to regulate his heart rhythm.

Geneva Health Solutions featured at 40th Annual Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Session

Geneva Health Solutions, a solutions provider of technology-enabled services in the implantable cardiac device space and a BioTelemetry, Inc. company, released cardiac device data findings at the 40th Annual (2019) Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) conference.

The moderated session titled, “The Role of Novel Remote Monitoring Data Management System Ameliorating Data Deluge from Implantable Loop Recorders,” was presented by Manish Wadhwa, M.D. F.H.R.S. (Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society), Geneva’s Co-founder and Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Wadhwa reviewed the following highlights at the conference:

  • Over a three-month time period, over 22,000 ILR reports poured onto the Geneva platform from one cardiology practice.
  • Approximately eight percent of these reports required immediate action, while seventy-eight percent of the reports did not contain useful information or represented data that could be stratified for timely but non-urgent review and reporting.
  • The Geneva platform was designed to collate these reports and provide practitioners more meaningful reporting.

REX spotlighted in Houston Chronicle

Houston local Kara Biggs recently bought a home with REX, which charges home sellers a 2 percent fee instead of the traditional 6 percent fee. REX can offer sellers that fee by declining to pay the buyer’s agent. Buyers have the option of having a salaried REX agent guide them through the transaction for free or paying for an outside agent themselves. Not making the buyer’s agent an offer also means that the listing cannot be advertised on multiple listing services, such as HAR.com and Realtor.com. REX’s homes can only be advertised directly to customers or on websites such as Zillow and Trulia, which only receive part of their listings from multiple listing services.

Jonathan Friedland, the company’s head of communications, said such restrictions are worth it in order to offer lower fees.

“If you’re in the (Multiple Listing Service) you’re bound to live within these rules. That’s what makes the MLS so problematic for anyone who is really trying to innovate in the industry,” he said. “If you don’t abide by some of these rules, you are kicked out.”
